Huge waves can hit the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 occurred off the coast of the US state of Alaska on Thursday, July 29. This was reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
It is indicated that the epicenter of the tremors was located at a distance of 91 kilometers from the village of Perryville. The hearth lay at a depth of 46.7 kilometers. There have been no reports of damage or injuries yet.
There were also about a dozen aftershocks. The magnitude of the strongest of them was 6.2.
After the earthquake, a tsunami threat was declared. According to the National Tsunami Warning Center, the elements may hit the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Also, the Japanese national Meteorological Administration admits the possibility of a tsunami in large areas of the Pacific region. Seismologists are also currently determining whether a tsunami threatens the territory of Japan.
Recall that last week there was a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the border between Costa Rica and Panama. The epicenter of the tremors was located in the Pacific Ocean, 113 km south of the border cape Burika.
